Moving to the Lake District – Life inside the Lakes

Grisedale Tarn by David Bridges

The Lake District is an ever-changing landscape with beauty around every corner. There truly is something for everyone here in the Lakes, whether you’re into outdoor pursuits, history, or relaxation. This may be one of the reasons why back in 2020, the Lake District was named as the fourth most popular area to relocate to in the UK but what is life really like as a resident of the Lake District?

Housing

The Lake District National Park is entirely situated within the county of Cumbria, which has an overall population of 500,000. Given its size as the third largest county in England, it explains the low population density of just 73 inhabitants per square kilometre. Taking a step further, the Lake District National Park has a population density of just 17.1 inhabitants per square kilometre thanks to our beautiful, untouched surroundings.

There are a wide variety of properties for sale within the Lakes whether you are looking for a bungalow for sale in Penrith or a coastal property in the South Lakes. Housing prices vary tremendously, according to Zoopla houses in Barrow-in-Furness have an average sale price of around £156,927 whereas the average property price in Bowness-on-Windermere is £512,245.

Finding a charming property for sale in the Lake District is not difficult, however finding your dream home is a little bit more tricky as there is so much out there. Get in touch with us to find out how we can help you to find your forever home.

Employment

Employment opportunities across the county are wide-ranging, from those looking for seasonal work to those seeking year-round or long-term opportunities. Cumbria also has a long history of supporting self-employment or start-up businesses across a range of sectors.

If you are looking for work within the National Park boundary, it goes without saying that a large proportion of available employment opportunities lie within the leisure, tourism, and hospitality industries. However, there are a wealth of opportunities outside of these specific fields. Individual, small and large companies have a variety of employment opportunities for those looking to start their working life via an apprenticeship or for those looking to move on and develop their careers.

With the increase in hybrid and home working opportunities, many employment sectors that weren’t readily available to those choosing to live within the Lake District National Park are now a real opportunity.

Hobbies

The stunning natural surroundings of the Lake District offer endless opportunities for outdoor recreation from fell walking to open water swimming to ghyll scrambling. We even have 10 weekly Park Run events throughout the area which are incredibly popular with locals and tourists alike.

Aside from an endless list of outdoor pursuits, Cumbria and the Lake District are both home to huge, national events such as Kendal Calling, Great North Swim, and Lake District Challenge making it an enjoyable and rewarding place to live.
